The Role Of Community On The Health Status Of The Population
The roles of community in advancing the health status of the population are varied. While community participation is essential to advancing population health, evidence to support whether community participation directly advances the health status of the population is limited.1,2 It is limited because the role of community is constantly re-formulated to fit the needs of the population it serves.1,2 According to McLeroy et al, community can be defined in four ways: ââ¬Å"community as setting, community as target, community as agent, and community as resource.â⬠Due to the numerous ways community can be defined, generalizing the role of community and how it impacts health is difficult. While generalizing can be difficult, providing strong evidence to support the roles of communities influencing positive health outcomes is more so. This literature review will attempt to address the following questions as they relate to communities advancing health: 1. What is the evidence of the roles communities play in community health status improvement? 2. What types of change have been reported? Service delivery? Prevention? Infrastructure changes - physical activity resources? School-based programs? Nutrition? 3. How do community organizations get involved in health improvement interventions? 4. What is the role of leadership in community level health services improvement? 5. What is the role of community healthcare systems in population health improvement initiatives? 6.
